Mac OS X Networking Bugs Let Remote and Local Users Deny Service
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1022672
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1022672
CVE Reference:   CVE-2009-2190, CVE-2009-2194   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Aug 6 2009
Impact:   Denial of service via local system, Denial of service via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 10.5 - 10.5.7
Description:   Two vulnerabilities were reported in Mac OS X. A remote or local user can cause denial of service conditions.

A remote user can open a large number of connections to an inetd-based launchd service to cause launchd to stop processing incoming connections to the target service [CVE-2009-2190]. The system must be restarted to return to normal operations.

A local user can send messages containing file descriptors to a socket that has no receiver to cause the target system to shutdown [CVE-2009-2194]. Bennet Yee of Google Inc. reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can cause launchd to stop processing connections for the target service.

A local user can cause the target system to shutdown.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (Security Update 2009-003 / Mac OS X v10.5.8), available from the Software Update pane in System Preferences, or Apple's Software Downloads web site at:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
