Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Mac OS X in the Apple Remote Desktop Agent. A local user can obtain root privileges on the target system.

A local user can invoke the Apple Remote Desktop Agent and supply AppleScript to execute arbitrary commands on the target system with root privileges.

A demonstration exploit command is provided:

osascript -e 'tell app "ARDAgent" to do shell script "whoami"'

Some versions of 10.4 may not be affected.

Impact:   A local user can obtain root privileges on the target system.
Solution:   Apple has issued a fix (Security Update 2008-005), which can be downloaded and installed via Software Update preferences, or from Apple Downloads at:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

A fixed version of Apple Remote Desktop (3.2.2) is also available. The fixed version is not required if patch 2008-005 has been applied.
