A vulnerability was reported in BrightStor ARCserve. A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system.|
A remote user can send specially crafted RPC strings to trigger one of several stack overflows and execute arbitrary code on the target system. The code will run with the privileges of the target service.
The vendor was notified on March 8, 2007.
Tenable Network Security discovered this vulnerability. TippingPoint reported this vulnerability.

This vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary code on
vulnerable installations of Computer Associates BrightStor ARCserve
Media Server. User interaction is not required to exploit this
The specific flaw exists in the SUN RPC service which binds to a
randomly chosen high TCP port. The target port can be obtained by
querying the port mapper. Multiple stack-based buffer overflows exist
during the parsing of malformed RPC strings. Exploitation of these
overflows can result in arbitrary code execution.
