(Red Hat Issues Fix) Mozilla Firefox Session Restore Same-Origin Policy Flaw Permits Cross-Domain Scripting and Privilege Escalation Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1021199
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1021199
CVE Reference:   CVE-2008-5019   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Nov 13 2008
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): prior to 2.0.0.18, 3.x prior to 3.0.4
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Mozilla Firefox. A remote user can conduct cross-domain scripting attacks to gain privileges on the target user's system.

The session restore feature does not properly enforce same-origin policy. A remote user cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser in the context of an arbitrary site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Arbitrary scripting code can also be executed with chrome privileges.

David Bloom and moz_bug_r_a4 reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with arbitrary sites, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A remote user can gain chrome privileges on the target user's browser.

Solution:   Red Hat has released a fix.

=====================================================================

3. Description:

Mozilla Firefox is an open source Web browser.

Several flaws were found in the processing of malformed web content. A web
page containing malicious content could cause Firefox to crash or,
potentially, execute arbitrary code as the user running Firefox.
(CVE-2008-0017, CVE-2008-5014, CVE-2008-5016, CVE-2008-5017,
CVE-2008-5018, CVE-2008-5019, CVE-2008-5021)

Several flaws were found in the way malformed content was processed. A web
site containing specially-crafted content could potentially trick a Firefox
user into surrendering sensitive information. (CVE-2008-5022,
CVE-2008-5023, CVE-2008-5024)

A flaw was found in the way Firefox opened "file:" URIs. If a file: URI was
loaded in the same tab as a chrome or privileged "about:" page, the file:
URI could execute arbitrary code with the permissions of the user running
Firefox. (CVE-2008-5015)

For technical details regarding these flaws, please see the Mozilla
security advisories for Firefox 3.0.4. You can find a link to the Mozilla
advisories in the References section.

All firefox users should upgrade to these updated packages, which contain
backported patches that correct these issues.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via Red Hat Network. Details on how to use
the Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at
http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_58_10188
