Mozilla Thunderbird Multiple Flaws Permit Remote Code Execution and Keystroke Detection
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1026447
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1026447
CVE Reference:   CVE-2011-3658, CVE-2011-3660, CVE-2011-3661, CVE-2011-3663, CVE-2011-3664, CVE-2011-3665, CVE-2011-3666   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Dec 21 2011
Impact:   Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): prior to 9.0
Description:   Multiple vulnerabilities were reported in Mozilla Thunderbird. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system. A remote user can detect keystrokes when scripting is disabled in certain cases.

A remote user can create specially crafted content that, when loaded by the target user, will trigger a memory corruption error and execute arbitrary code on the target system [CVE-2011-3660]. The code will run with the privileges of the target user.

Specially crafted JavaScript can trigger a flaw in the YARR regular expression library that could be triggered by javascript in web content [CVE-2011-3661]. Thunderbird 3.1 is not affected.

If SVG elements are removed during a DOMAttrModified event handler, an out-of-bounds memory access error may occur [CVE-2011-3658]. Thunderbird 8 users are affected only if using a browser-like feature that allows scripts to run.

A remote user can exploit SVG animation accessKey events to detect key strokes even when JavaScript was disabled [CVE-2011-3663]. Accessing remote content is disabled by default.

When a plugin deletes its containing DOM frame during a call from that frame, a null pointer dereference can occur on OS X [CVE-2011-3664].

A crash may occur when scaling an OGG <video> element to extreme sizes [CVE-2011-3665].

The fix for the vulnerability reported in MFSA 2011-40 (to treat .jar files as executables) was incomplete on Mac OS X [CVE-2011-3666].

Alexandre Poirot, Chris Blizzard, Kyle Huey, Scoobidiver, Christian Holler, David Baron, Gary Kwong, Jim Blandy, Bob Clary, Jesse Ruderman, Marcia Knous, Rober Longson, Aki Helin, regenrecht (via TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative), Mario Heiderich, Richard Bateman, and sczimmer reported these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A remote user can create content that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.

A remote user can detect user keystrokes when scripting is disabled.

Solution:   The vendor has issued a fix (3.1.17, 9.0).
