Description:   A vulnerability was reported in GNU ed. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.

A remote user can create a specially crafted file that, when processed by the target user, will trigger a heap overflow and potentially execute arbitrary code on the target system. The code will run with the privileges of the target user.

The vulnerability resides in 'signal.c'.

Impact:   A remote user can create a file that, when processed by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.
Solution:   The vendor has issued a fixed version (1.0), available at:

Subject:  [Bug-ed] Version 1.0 of GNU ed released

I am pleased to announce the release of GNU ed 1.0.


GNU ed is an 8-bit clean, more or less POSIX-compliant implementation of
the standard Unix line editor.


The homepage is at http://www.gnu.org/software/ed/ed.html


The sources can be dowloaded from http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/ed/ or from
your favorite GNU mirror.


The md5sum is:

This release is also GPG signed. You can download the signature by
appending ".sig" to the URL.


Changes in version 1.0:


  * The option "--program-prefix" has been added to the configure script.
