SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1026700
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1026700
CVE Reference:   CVE-2011-3026   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Feb 17 2012
Original Entry Date:  Feb 17 2012
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in libpng. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system. Mozilla Firefox is affected.

The software does not properly verify a size value when allocating memory during chunk decompression. A remote user can create a specially crafted PNG image file that, when loaded by the target user or application, will trigger a heap overflow in png_decompress_chunk() and execute arbitrary code on the target system. The code will run with the privileges of the target user or application.

The vulnerability resides in 'pngrutil.c'.

Jueri Aedla reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can create a PNG image file that, when loaded by the target user or application, will execute arbitrary code on the target system.
Solution:   Red Hat has issued a fix for Mozilla Firefox.

3. Description:

Mozilla Firefox is an open source web browser.

A heap-based buffer overflow flaw was found in the way Firefox handled
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) images. A web page containing a malicious
PNG image could cause Firefox to crash or, possibly, execute arbitrary
code with the privileges of the user running Firefox. (CVE-2011-3026)

All Firefox users should upgrade to this updated package, which corrects
this issue. After installing the update, Firefox must be restarted for the
changes to take effect.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously-released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via the Red Hat Network. Details on how to
use the Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at
https://access.redhat.com/kb/docs/DOC-11259
