(Red Hat Issues Fix) OpenSSL ECDH Ciphersuite and CRL Update Bugs Lets Remote Users Deny Service and Bypass CRL Updates
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1026245
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1026245
CVE Reference:   CVE-2011-3207   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Oct 26 2011
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Modification of system information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 0.9.8 through 0.9.8s, 1.0.0 through 1.0.0d
Description:   Two vulnerabilities were reported in OpenSSL. A remote user can cause denial of service conditions. A remote user may be able to bypass CRL updates.

The internal certificate verification routines may incorrectly accept a certificate revocation list (CRL) with a nextUpdate field value that is in the past [CVE-2011-3207]. Applications that enable the internal CRL checking [not the default setting] are affected. Only versions 1.0.0 through 1.0.0d are affected.

Kaspar Brand reported this vulnerability.

A remote user can send a specially crafted, out of order handshake message to exploit a flaw in the ephemeral ECDH ciphersuite code and cause the service to crash [CVE-2011-3210].

Adam Langley reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can cause the target service to crash.

A remote user may be able to bypass CRL updates.

Solution:   Red Hat has issued a fix for CVE-2011-3207.

Synopsis: Moderate: openssl security update
Advisory ID: RHSA-2011:1409-01
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Advisory URL: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2011-1409.html
Issue date: 2011-10-26
CVE Names: CVE-2011-3207
=====================================================================

1. Summary:

Updated openssl packages that fix one security issue are now available for
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.

The Red Hat Security Response Team has rated this update as having moderate
security impact. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score,
which gives a detailed severity rating, is available from the CVE link in
the References section.

2. Relevant releases/architectures:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop (v. 6) - i386, x86_64

3. Description:

OpenSSL is a toolkit that implements the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL v2/v3)
and Transport Layer Security (TLS v1) protocols, as well as a
full-strength, general purpose cryptography library.

An uninitialized variable use flaw was found in OpenSSL. This flaw could
cause an application using the OpenSSL Certificate Revocation List (CRL)
checking functionality to incorrectly accept a CRL that has a nextUpdate
date in the past. (CVE-2011-3207)

All OpenSSL users should upgrade to these updated packages, which contain a
backported patch to resolve this issue. For the update to take effect, all
services linked to the OpenSSL library must be restarted, or the system
rebooted.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously-released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via the Red Hat Network. Details on how to
use the Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at
https://access.redhat.com/kb/docs/DOC-11259
