SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1023495
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1023495
CVE Reference:   CVE-2010-0027   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Feb 9 2010
Original Entry Date:  Jan 21 2010
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 5.01 SP4, 6, 6 SP1, 7, 8
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Microsoft Internet Explorer and the Windows operating system shell handler. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.

A remote user can create a specially crafted URL that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target system. The code will run with the privileges of the target user.

Code that is called to validate the URL could execute a binary located on the target system.

Depending on what version of Internet Explorer and what version of the Windows operating system is used, the flaw may reside in the Internet Explorer code or in the Windows shell handler code.

Brett Moore via TippingPoint and Lostmon Lords reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can create a URL that, when loaded by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.
Solution:   Microsoft has issued two separate bulletins to address these vulnerabilities. The applicable bulletin depends on which version of Microsoft Windows and which version of Internet Explorer is installed on the system.
