Updated:  Aug 14 2009
Original Entry Date:  Nov 12 2008
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of system information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 6.0 SP4, 7.0, 7.1; and prior service packs
Description:   Several vulnerabilities were reported in Sun Java System Identity Manager. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks. A remote user can conduct cross-site request forgery attacks. A local or remote user can view certain files on the target system.

The software does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input. A remote user can create a specially crafted URL that, when loaded by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the Sun Java System Identity Manager software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A remote user can also redirect the target user to arbitrary sites.

A remote user can also conduct cross-site request forgery (CSRF) attacks to cause the target user's browser to perform administrative functions.

A remote or local user can exploit an unspecified flaw to access certain files on the target Identity Manager server's filesystem.

Richard Brain, Adrian Pastor, and Jan Fry of ProCheckup Ltd. reported these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the Sun Java System Identity Manager software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A remote user can view certain files on the target system.

Solution:   The vendor has issued the following fixes.

* Sun Java System Identity Manager 6.0 with patches 136848-02 or later and 139081-01 or later
* Sun Java System Identity Manager 6.0 SP1 with patches 136849-02 or later and 139082-01 or later
* Sun Java System Identity Manager 6.0 SP2 with patches 136850-02 or later and 139083-01 or later
* Sun Java System Identity Manager 6.0 SP3 with patches 136851-02 or later and 139084-01 or later
* Sun Java System Identity Manager 6.0 SP4 with patch 139085-01 or later
* Sun Java System Identity Manager 7.0 with patches 136852-02 or later and 139086-01 or later
