(Red Hat Issues Fix for Thunderbird) Mozilla Firefox Bug in JavaScript Garbage Collector Lets Remote Users Deny Service
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1019954
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1019954
CVE Reference:   CVE-2008-1380   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Apr 30 2008
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Mozilla Firefox. A remote user can cause denial of service conditions. Thunderbird is affected.

A remote user can create specially crafted HTML that, when loaded by the target user, will trigger a flaw in the JavaScript garbage collector code and cause the target user's browser to crash.

The vendor indicates that similar crashes have been exploitable in the past, so arbitrary code execution may be possible. However, the reported did not confirm code execution.

This vulnerability was introduced by the fix for CVE-2008-1237 described in Mozilla Foundation Security Advisory 2008-15 [see Alert ID 1019695].

Impact:   A remote user can create HTML that, when loaded by the target user, will cause the target user's browser to crash.

A remote user may be able to cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.

Solution:   Red Hat has released a fix for Thunderbird, which is affected by this vulnerability.

The Red Hat advisory is available at:

This update has been rated as having moderate security impact by the Red
Hat Security Response Team.

2. Relevant releases/architectures:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop version 4 - i386, x86_64
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES version 4 - i386, ia64, x86_64

3. Description:

Mozilla Thunderbird is a standalone mail and newsgroup client.

A flaw was found in the processing of malformed JavaScript content. An HTML
mail message containing such malicious content could cause Thunderbird to
crash or, potentially, execute arbitrary code as the user running
Thunderbird. (CVE-2008-1380)

Note: JavaScript support is disabled by default in Thunderbird; the above
issue is not exploitable unless JavaScript is enabled.

All Thunderbird users should upgrade to these updated packages, which
contain backported patches to resolve these issues.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via Red Hat Network. Details on how to use
the Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at
http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_58_10188

5. Bugs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/):
