(IBM Issues Fix for WebSphere for z/OS) Apache Input Validation Hole in Default HTTP 413 Error Page Permits Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1019169
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1019169
CVE Reference:   CVE-2007-6203   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jan 9 2008
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Apache. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks. IBM WebSphere for z/OS is affected.

The server does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input before displaying the input as part of an HTTP 413 error page. A remote user can create a specially crafted HTTP method request that, when submitted by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the Apache software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

The server will return a '413 Request Entity Too Large' error page when the user submits an invalid length data value.

A demonstration exploit request is provided:

[xss] / HTTP/1.1
Host: target-domain.foo
Connection: close
Content-length: -1
[LF]
[LF]

The vendor was notified on November 14, 2007.

Adrian Pastor and Amir Azam of ProCheckUp Ltd. reported this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the Apache software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.
Solution:   IBM has issued a fix for WebSphere for z/OS (Fix Pack 6.1.0.15).
