Date:  Mar 1 2007
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Gzip. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system. HP Software Distributor is affected.

A remote user can create a specially crafted archive that, when expanded by the target user or application, will trigger a buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code on the target system. The code will run with the privileges of the target user or application.

A specially crafted archive can also trigger a NULL pointer dereference or cause gzip to enter an infinite loop.

Tavis Ormandy of the Google Security Team discovered these vulnerabilities.

Impact:   A remote user can create an archive that, when processed by the target user or application, will execute arbitrary code on the target system or cause gzip to crash or hang.
Solution:   HP has issued a fix for Software Distributor, which includes gzip and is affected by this vulnerability.
