foresite CMS Input Validation Hole in 'query' Parameter Permits Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1017134
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1017134
CVE Reference:   CVE-2006-5643   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Jun 3 2008
Original Entry Date:  Oct 30 2006
Impact:   Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Exploit Included:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in foresite CMS. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The search function ('search_de.html') does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input in the 'query' parameter before displaying the input. A remote user can create a specially crafted URL that, when loaded by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the foresite CMS software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

The vendor was notified on August 20, 2006, without response.

David Vieira-Kurz discovered this vulnerability.

The original advisory is available at:

Introduction
============
foresite CMS is a content management system.

More Details
============
XSS:
Input passed directly to the "query" parameter in "search_de.html" is not properly sanitised before being returned to the user.
This can be exploited to execute arbitrary HTML and script code in a user's browser session in context of an affected site.

Fix
===
None

Solution
=============
Edit the source code to ensure that input is properly sanitised.
You should work with "htmlspecialchars()" or "htmlentities()" php-function to ensure that html tags
are not going to be executed. Further it is recommend to set off the "register globals" option in the
"php.ini" on your webserver.

Example:
$pass = htmlentities($_POST['pass']);
$test = htmlspecialchars($_GET('test'));
$id = intval($_POST['id']);
?>
