SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1015168
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1015168
CVE Reference:   CVE-2005-0803, CVE-2005-2123, CVE-2005-2124   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Dec 1 2005
Original Entry Date:  Nov 8 2005
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Root access via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 2000 SP4, 2003 SP1, XP SP2; and prior service packs
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Microsoft Windows in the Graphics Rendering Engine. A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system. A remote user can also cause denial of service conditions.

The Windows Graphic Rendering Engine contains a buffer overflow in the rendering of Windows Metafile (WMF) and Enhanced Metafile (EMF) image formats [CVE-2005-2123]. A remote user can create a specially crafted file that, when processed by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system. The code will run with System level privileges.

A separate buffer overflow exists in the rendering of Windows Metafile (WMF) image formats [CVE-2005-2124]. Arbitrary code can be executed.

A separate buffer overflow exists in the rendering of Enhanced Metafile (EMF) image formats [CVE-2005-0803]. A remote user can cause the target application to crash. This vulnerability is currently being exploited in the wild [at the time of this entry.]

Images delivered via web sites or e-mail messages can exploit these vulnerabilities.

The vendor credits eEye Digital Security for reporting the Metafile vulnerability and Venustech AdDLab, eEye Digital Security, and Peter Ferrie of Symantec Security Response with reporting the Windows Metafile vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system.

A remote user can cause the target user's browers (or other affected application) to crash.

Solution:   The vendor has issued the following fixes:
