(Red Hat Issues Fix) Xloadimage Buffer Overflows in Processing NIFF Format Files Let Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1015076
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1015076
CVE Reference:   CVE-2005-3178   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Oct 19 2005
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Xloadimage. A remote user can cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's system.

A remote user can create a NIFF file with a specially crafted title field. When the file is processed with Xloadimage using the 'zoom', 'reduce', and 'rotate' functions, a buffer overflow may occur and arbitrary code can be executed.

The flaws reside in the zoom() function in 'zoom.c', the reduce() function in 'reduce.c', and the rotate() function in rotate.c.

Ariel Berkman discovered this vulnerability.

Impact:   A remote user can create a file that, when processed by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system with the privileges of the target user.
Solution:   Red Hat has released a fix.

Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux
CVE Names: CAN-2005-3178
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Summary:

A new xloadimage package that fixes bugs in handling malformed tiff and
pbm/pnm/ppm images, and in handling metacharacters in file names is now
available.

This update has been rated as having low security impact by the Red Hat
Security Response Team.

3. Problem description:

The xloadimage utility displays images in an X Window System window, loads
images into the root window, or writes images into a file. Xloadimage
supports many image types (including GIF, TIFF, JPEG, XPM, and XBM).

A flaw was discovered in xloadimage via which an attacker can construct a
NIFF image with a very long embedded image title. This image can cause a
buffer overflow. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project
(cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2005-3178 to this issue.

All users of xloadimage should upgrade to this erratum package, which
contains backported patches to correct these issues.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied. Use Red Hat
Network to download and update your packages. To launch the Red Hat
Update Agent, use the following command:

    up2date

For information on how to install packages manually, refer to the
following Web page for the System Administration or Customization
guide specific to your system:

    http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/

5. Bug IDs fixed (http://bugzilla.redhat.com/):
