SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1013025
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1013025
CVE Reference:   CVE-2004-0940   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jan 28 2005
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via local system, User access via local system
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 1.3.x
Description:   Crazy Einstein reported a buffer overflow in Apache mod_include. A local user may be able to gain elevated privileges.

It is reported that the get_tag() function contains a buffer overflow that can be triggered, for example, from the handle_echo() function. A local user can create specially crafted HTML that, when processed by Apache, will execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the httpd child process.

Impact:   A local user can execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the Apache httpd child process.
Solution:   HP has issued the following fixes for B.11.04:

PHSS_32140 Virtualvault 4.7 IWS update
PHSS_32182 Virtualvault 4.7 OWS update

PHSS_32206 Virtualvault 4.6 IWS update
PHSS_32183 Virtualvault 4.6 OWS update

PHSS_32141 Virtualvault 4.5 IWS update
PHSS_32184 Virtualvault 4.5 OWS update

PHSS_32362 Webproxy server A.02.10 (Apache 1.x) update
PHSS_32363 Webproxy server A.02.00 update

POTENTIAL SECURITY IMPACT:

Remote Denial of Service (DoS) and execurtion of arbitrary code.

VULNERABILITY SUMMARY:
Two security vulnerabilities have been reported in Apache HTTP server (http://httpd.apache.org/) versions prior to Apache 1.3.33 that may allow
a Denial of Service (DoS) attack and execution of arbitrarty code.
REFERENCES:

CAN-2004-0492, CAN-2004-0940
SUPPORTED SOFTWARE VERSIONS*: ONLY impacted versions are listed.
HP-UX B.11.04 with VirtualVault 4.7, Virtualvault 4.6, or
VirtualVault 4.5, and HP Webproxy A.02.10 and A.02.00 only.
BACKGROUND:
The Apache group, while announcing the release Apache HTTP
Server version 1.3.33, said that the following security defects
had been addressed.

1. Heap-based buffer overflow in mod_proxy in Apache 1.3.25
to 1.3.31 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of
service (process crash) and possibly execute arbitrary
code via a negative Content-Length HTTP header field, which
causes a large amount of data to be copied.

2. Buffer overflow in mod_include for Apache 1.3.x to 1.3.32
allows local users who can create SSI documents to execute
arbitrary code as the apache user via SSI (XSSI) documents
that trigger a length calculation error.

AFFECTED VERSIONS

Note: To determine if a system has an affected version,
search the output of "swlist -a revision -l fileset"
for an affected fileset. Then determine if the
recommended patch or update is installed.
