(Conectiva Issues Fix) KDE Temporary File Bugs Let Local Users Gain Elevated Privileges and Frame Injection Flaw Lets Remote Users Spoof Web Sites
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1012717
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1012717
CVE Reference:   CAN-2004-0689, CAN-2004-0690, CAN-2004-0721   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Dec 29 2004
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information, User access via local system
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 3.2.3 and prior versions
Description:   Several vulnerabilities were reported in KDE. A local user may be able to obtain elevated privileges or deny service. A remote user may be able to spoof web sites.

It is reported that a local user can cause KDE to create or overwrite arbitrary files by creating a symbolic link (symlink) from a file on the system to a temporary file to be used by KDE [CVE: CAN-2004-0689]. Then, when the target user runs KDE applications outside of the KDE environment, the symlinked file may be created or truncated. The symlinks are created in '~/.kde'.

A local user can exploit this to prevent KDE applications from operating properly or to obtain elevated privileges.

This vulnerability was reported by Andrew Tuitt on June 23, 2004 and affects version 3.2.3 and prior versions.

It is reported that KDE's DCOPServer creates temporary files in an unsafe manner [CVE: CAN-2004-0690], including temporary files used for authentication. A local user can gain access to a target user's account.

This vulnerability was reported by Colin Phipps on July 25, 2004 and affects KDE 3.2 through 3.2.3.

It is also reported that a remote user can create HTML that, when loaded, will open a frame in an arbitrary frame-based web page that is currently open on the target user's system [CVE: CAN-2004-0721]. A remote user can exploit this flaw to spoof a web site.

KDE version KDE 3.2.3 and prior versions are affected.

Secunia reported this vulnerability on July 1, 2004.

Impact:   A local user can deny service to KDE applications.

A local user may be able to gain elevated privileges.

A remote user may be able to spoof arbitrary web sites.

Solution:   Conectiva has released a fix.

CONECTIVA LINUX SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENT
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------

PACKAGE : kde
SUMMARY : Fix for multiple security vulnerabilities
DATE : 2004-09-13 11:35:00
ID : CLA-2004:864
RELEVANT
RELEASES : 9, 10

- -------------------------------------------------------------------------

DESCRIPTION
KDE[1] is a very popular graphical desktop environment available for
 GNU/Linux and other operating systems.

This announcement fixes the following vulnerabilities:

 1. Use of predictable directory names (CAN-2004-0689[2])

As discovered by Andrew Tuitt, KDE's usage of predictable directory
names could be used by a local attacker to cause a denial of service,
 even allowing file overwritting.

 2. Use of insecure temporary files (CAN-2004-0690[3])

KDE's DCOPServer created temporary files in an insecure manner. Since
this temporary files are used for authentication related purposes
this could potentially allow a local attacker to compromise the
account of any user which runs a KDE application.

 3. Cookie injection in Konqueror (CAN-2004-0746[4])

WESTPOINT internet reconnaissance services alerted the KDE security
team that the KDE web browser Konqueror allowed websites to set
cookies for certain country specific secondary top level domains and
that it could be used as a part of a session fixation attack.

 4. Frame injection in Konqueror (CAN-2004-0721[5])

A frame injection vulnerability was found by Gary McKay first on a
Mozilla browser but it also affected KDE's browser, Konqueror. A
malicious website could use this to load arbitrary content in an
arbitrary frame in any other browser window.

SOLUTION
It is recommended that all users of the KDE desktop, including those
who use other desktop and only use certain KDE components such as
 Konqueror, upgrade their KDE packages.

IMPORTANT: in order to close the vulnerbilities, all KDE applications
 have to be restarted.
