(Conectiva Issues Fix) Libxml2 URL Parsing and DNS Resolution Buffer Overflows May Let Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1012262
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1012262
CVE Reference:   CAN-2004-0989   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Nov 19 2004
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 2.6.12, 2.6.13
Description:   Some buffer overflow vulnerabilities were reported in Libxml2. A remote user may be able to execute arbitrary code on the target system, depending on how the Libxml2 library is used.

sean reported that a remote user can create a specially crafted FTP URL that, when loaded by the target user, will trigger a buffer overflow. The flaw resides in the xmlNanoFTPScanURL() function in 'nanoftp.c'.

It is also reported that a remote user can create an FTP proxy URL that, when loaded, will also trigger a buffer overflow. The flaw resides in the xmlNanoFTPScanProxy() function in 'nanoftp.c'.

In addition, there are several buffer overflows in the resolution of domain names. A remote user with control of a DNS server or the ability to spoof a DNS server can trigger these buffer overflows to execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.

Impact:   A remote user may be able to execute arbitrary code on the target system. The specific impact depends on how the Libxml2 library is used.
Solution:   Conectiva has released a fix.

CONECTIVA LINUX SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENT
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------

PACKAGE : libxml2
SUMMARY : Fixes for libxml2 buffer overflow vulnerabilities
DATE : 2004-11-18 09:20:00
ID : CLA-2004:890
RELEVANT
RELEASES : 9, 10

- -------------------------------------------------------------------------

DESCRIPTION
The XML C library[1] (libxml2) is used by many programs to load and
save extensible data structures or to manipulate several kinds of XML
 files.

This update fixes a buffer overflow vulnerability[2,3] in the URI
parsing code found by "infamous41md" at the nanoftp and nanohttp
modules of libxml2. An attacker may exploit this vulnerability to
execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running an
affected application. Depending of the scenario where this
application is used, this vulnerability can be remotely exploitable.

SOLUTION
It is recommended that all libxml/libxml2 users upgrade their
 packages.
