(Gentoo Issues Fix) BNC Buffer Overflow in getnickuserhost() Function Lets Remote Users Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1012244
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1012244
CVE Reference:   GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Nov 16 2004
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 2.8.9 and prior versions
Description:   A buffer overflow vulnerability was reported in BNC in the getnickuserhost() function. A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the proxy.

LSS Security reported that when a target user connects to a remote IRC server via the BNC proxy, the IRC server can send a specially crafted response containing the '!' or '@' characters to overflow a 3 byte buffer. Arbitrary code can be executed.

Leon Juranic is credited with discovering this flaw.

Demonstration exploit code is available at:

http://security.lss.hr/en/PoC/

The original advisory is available at:

http://security.lss.hr/en/index.php?page=details&ID=LSS-2004-11-03

Impact:   A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system with the privileges of the target BNC proxy.
Solution:   Gentoo has released a fix and indicates that all BNC users should upgrade to the latest version:

# emerge --sync
# emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=net-irc/bnc-2.9.1"

Synopsis
========

BNC contains a buffer overflow vulnerability that may lead to Denial of
Service and execution of arbitrary code.

Background
==========

BNC (BouNCe) is an IRC proxy server.

Affected packages
=================

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
     Package      /  Vulnerable  /                          Unaffected
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
  1  net-irc/bnc       < 2.9.1                                >= 2.9.1

Description
===========

Leon Juranic discovered that BNC fails to do proper bounds checking
when checking server response.

Impact
======

An attacker could exploit this to cause a Denial of Service and
potentially execute arbitary code with the permissions of the user
running BNC.

Workaround
==========

There is no known workaround at this time.

Resolution
==========

All BNC users should upgrade to the latest version:

    # emerge --sync
    # emerge --ask --oneshot --verbose ">=net-irc/bnc-2.9.1"
