Category:   Application (Web Server/CGI)  >   Apache Vendors:   Apache Software Foundation
(Gentoo Issues Fix) Apache httpd Header Line Memory Allocation Lets Remote Users Crash the Server
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1010656
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1010656
CVE Reference:   CAN-2004-0493   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jul 7 2004
Impact:   Denial of service via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 2.0.49 and prior 2.x versions
Description:   A denial of service vulnerability was reported in the Apache web server in the folding of header lines. A remote user can cause the application to consume arbitrary amounts of memory.

Georgi Guninski reported that a remote user can send header lines that begin with a tab or space character to cause ap_get_mime_headers_core() in 'server/protocol.c' to allocate memory for the header line. A remote user can reportedly send a large number of specially crafted header lines to cause Apache to consume all available memory on the target system and crash.

The report indicates that on 64-bit systems that have more than 4GB of virtual memory, a remote user may be able to trigger a heap-based buffer overflow, but it is not clear whether this can be exploited to execute arbitrary code or not.

The vendor has reportedly been notified.

The original advisory is available at:

http://www.guninski.com/httpd1.html

Impact:   A remote user can cause the httpd process to crash.
Solution:   Gentoo has released a fix and indicates that Apache 2 users should upgrade to the latest version of Apache:

# emerge sync

# emerge -pv ">=net-www/apache-2.0.49-r4"
# emerge ">=net-www/apache-2.0.49-r4"

Vendor URL:  httpd.apache.org/ (Links to External Site)
Cause:   Resource error
Underlying OS:   Linux (Gentoo)

Synopsis
========

A bug in Apache may allow a remote attacker to perform a Denial of
Service attack. With certain configurations this could lead to a heap
based buffer overflow.

Background
==========

The Apache HTTP Server Project is an effort to develop and maintain an
open-source HTTP server for modern operating systems. The goal of this
project is to provide a secure, efficient and extensible server that
provides services in tune with the current HTTP standards.

Affected packages
=================

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
     Package         /    Vulnerable    /                   Unaffected
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
  1  net-www/apache      <= 2.0.49-r3                     >= 2.0.49-r4
                                                                   < 2

Description
===========

A bug in the protocol.c file handling header lines will cause Apache to
allocate memory for header lines starting with TAB or SPACE.

Impact
======

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability to perform a Denial of
Service attack by causing Apache to exhaust all memory. On 64 bit
systems with more than 4GB of virtual memory a possible integer
signedness error could lead to a buffer based overflow causing Apache
to crash and under some circumstances execute arbitrary code as the
user running Apache, usually "apache".

Workaround
==========

There is no known workaround at this time. All users are encouraged to
upgrade to the latest available version:

Resolution
==========

Apache 2 users should upgrade to the latest version of Apache:

    # emerge sync

    # emerge -pv ">=net-www/apache-2.0.49-r4"
    # emerge ">=net-www/apache-2.0.49-r4"
