(Gentoo Issues Fix) Monit Buffer Overflow Lets Remote Users Obtain Root Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1009634
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1009634
CVE Reference:   GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Apr 1 2004
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Root access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 4.1
Description:   A vulnerability was reported in Monit. A remote user can cause the system to crash or can gain root access on the target system.

S-Quadra reported that a remote user can supply a specially crafted HTTP request to the target server to trigger a stack overflow and execute arbitrary code, potentially with root privileges.

It is also reported that a remote user can suppy a negative value in a Content-Length header field to cause an xmalloc() call to fail, crashing the Monit daemon.

The vendor was reportedly notified on 21 November 2003.

Impact:   A remote user can cause the daemon to crash.

A remote user can execute arbitrary code with root privileges on the target system.

Solution:   Gentoo has released a fix and indicates that Monit users should upgrade to version 4.2 or later:

# emerge sync

# emerge -pv ">=app-admin/monit-4.2"
# emerge ">=app-admin/monit-4.2"

Cause:   Boundary error
Underlying OS:   Linux (Gentoo)

Synopsis
========

A denial of service and a buffer overflow vulnerability have been found
in Monit.

Background
==========

Monit is a system administration utility that allows management and
monitoring of processes, files, directories and devices on a Unix
system.

Affected packages
=================

     -------------------------------------------------------------------
      Package          /   Vulnerable   /                    Unaffected
     -------------------------------------------------------------------
      app-admin/monit        <= 4.1                              >= 4.2

Description
===========

A denial of service may occur due to Monit not sanitizing remotely
supplied HTTP parameters before passing them to memory allocation
functions. This could allow an attacker to cause an unexpected
condition that could lead to the Monit daemon crashing.

An overly long http request method may cause a buffer overflow due to
Monit performing insufficient bounds checking when handling HTTP
requests.

Impact
======

An attacker may crash the Monit daemon to create a denial of service
condition or cause a buffer overflow that would allow arbitrary code to
be executed with root privileges.

Workaround
==========

A workaround is not currently known for this issue. All users are
advised to upgrade to the latest version of the affected package.

Resolution
==========

Monit users should upgrade to version 4.2 or later:

     # emerge sync

     # emerge -pv ">=app-admin/monit-4.2"
     # emerge ">=app-admin/monit-4.2"
