(Red Hat Issues Fix for RH Enterprise Linux) Gaim Contains Multiple Overflows That Let a Remote User Execute Arbitrary Code
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1008995
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1008995
CVE Reference:   CAN-2004-0006, CAN-2004-0008   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Feb 10 2004
Impact:   Denial of service via network, Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 0.75 and prior versions
Description:   Multiple vulnerabilities were reported in Gaim. A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.

Stefan Esser of e-matters GmbH reported 12 vulnerabilities, including stack overflows, heap overflows, and an integer overflow. Some of the vulnerabilities require a man-in-the-middle attack to exploit.

Several of the vulnerabilities were due to buffer overflows in the processing of Yahoo! Messenger protocol.

An integer overflow was reported in the processing of the AIM/Oscar protocol.

A variety of other protocols and functions also contain overflows.

It is reported that two buffer overflows reside in the decoding of octal values in the yahoo_decode() function in
'gaim/src/protocols/yahoo/yahoo.c' [CVE: CAN-2004-0005]. Only version 0.75 is affected.

A remote server can send an HTTP reply header with specially crafted cookie values to trigger an overflow in 'gaim/src/protocols/yahoo/yahoo.c' in the yahoo_web_pending() function [CVE: CAN-2004-0006].

Two buffer overflows in yahoo_login_page_hash() can be triggered by specially crafted values in the Yahoo! login webpage [CVE: CAN-2004-0006].

A remote user can send a Yahoo! Messenger packet containing a specially crafted keyname value to the target server via the Yahoo! server to execute arbitrary code on the target system [CVE: CAN-2004-0006]. The flaw reportedly resides in the yahoo_packet_read() function in 'gaim/src/protocols/yahoo/yahoo.c'.

It is reported that a malicious AIM/Oscar directIM packet can trigger an overflow in the handlehdr_odc() function in 'gaim/src/protocols/oscar/ft.c' [CVE: CAN-2004-0008]. Versions 0.74 and prior are affected.

Two vulnerabilites were reported in the MIME decoding functions of quotedp_decode() in 'gaim/src/util.c' [CVE: CAN-2004-0005]. Only version 0.75 is affected.

The gaim_url_parse() function in 'gaim/src/util.c' reportedly splits URLs into fixed sized buffers [CVE: CAN-2004-0006].

The gaim_markup_extract_info_field() function in 'gaim/src/util.c' contains a stack overflow in several locations [CVE: CAN-2004-0007]. Versions 0.74 and earlier are affected.

A remote user acting as an HTTP proxy server can trigger an overflow in a connected Gaim client when the client is configured to use an HTTP proxy [CVE: CAN-2004-0006]. The flaw resides in the http_canread() function in 'gaim/src/proxy.c'.

The vendor was initially notified regarding the first of the bugs on January 4, 2004.

The original advisory is available at:

http://security.e-matters.de/advisories/012004.html

Impact:   A remote user can execute arbitrary code on the target system. In some of the vulnerabilities, the remote user must be operating as a malicious server. In some cases, the remote user must invoke a man-in-the-middle attack. In one case, a remote user can simply send a message via the Yahoo! server.
Solution:   Red Hat has released a fix.

Synopsis: Updated Gaim packages fix security vulnerabilities
Advisory ID: RHSA-2004:045-01
Issue date: 2004-02-09
Updated on: 2004-02-09
Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Keywords: gaim im

Obsoletes:
CVE Names: CAN-2004-0006 CAN-2004-0008
- ---------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Topic:

Updated Gaim packages that fix a pair of security vulnerabilities are now
available.

2. Relevant releases/architectures:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (Advanced Server) version 2.1 - i386, ia64
Red Hat Linux Advanced Workstation 2.1 - ia64
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES version 2.1 - i386
Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS version 2.1 - i386

3. Problem description:

Gaim is an instant messenger client that can handle multiple protocols.

Stefan Esser audited the Gaim source code and found a number of bugs that
have security implications. Many of these bugs do not affect the version
of Gaim distributed with version 2.1 of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

A buffer overflow exists in the HTTP Proxy connect code. If Gaim is
configured to use an HTTP proxy for connecting to a server, a malicious
HTTP proxy could run arbitrary code as the user running Gaim. The Common
Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name
CAN-2004-0006 to this issue.

An integer overflow in Gaim 0.74 and earlier, when allocating memory for a
directIM packet for AIM/Oscar, results in heap overflow. The Common
Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name
CAN-2004-0008 to this issue.

Users of Gaim should upgrade to these erratum packages, which contain
a backported security patch correcting this issue.

Red Hat would like to thank Steffan Esser for finding and reporting these
issues and Jacques A. Vidrine for providing initial patches.

4. Solution:

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:

rpm -Fvh [filenames]

where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those
RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are
not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you
can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the
desired RPMs.

Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many
people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:

up2date

This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.

If up2date fails to connect to Red Hat Network due to SSL Certificate
Errors, you need to install a version of the up2date client with an updated
certificate. The latest version of up2date is available from the Red Hat
FTP site and may also be downloaded directly from the RHN website:

https://rhn.redhat.com/help/latest-up2date.pxt

These packages are GPG signed by Red Hat for security. Our key is
available from https://www.redhat.com/security/keys.html

You can verify each package with the following command:

    rpm --checksig -v <filename>

If you only wish to verify that each package has not been corrupted or
tampered with, examine only the md5sum with the following command:

    md5sum <filename>
