(HP Issues Updated Fix) HP/UX 'ipcs' Buffer Overflow May Let Local Users Gain Elevated Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1007814
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1007814
CVE Reference:   GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Sep 25 2003
Impact:   Execution of arbitrary code via local system, User access via local system
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability was reported in the ipcs interprocess communication status utility on the HP/UX operating system. A local user may be able to gain elevated privileges.

It is reported that a local user can trigger a buffer overflow in /usr/bin/ipcs. It may be possible to exploit the overflow to execute arbitrary code on the system with 'sys' group privileges, but that was not confirmed in the report.

A demonstration exploit is provided:

/usr/bin/ipcs -C `perl -e 'print "A" x 2232'`

Impact:   A local user may be able to obtain elevated ('sys' group) privileges on the system.
Solution:   HP has released a general release patch. HP reports that if you have previously installed the temporary depot, you must remove the temporary depot before applying the new general release patch.

You can remove the temporary depot using Software Distributor (SD), then apply PHCO_29043 for release HP-UX B.11.00.

o  Security Bulletin Digest Split
   ------------------------------

   The security bulletins digest has been split into multiple digests
   based on the operating system (HP-UX, MPE/iX, and HP Secure OS

   IT Resource Center on the World Wide Web at:

     http://support.itrc.hp.com/

   Under the Maintenance and Support Menu, click on the "more..." link.

   using your IT Resource Center User ID and Password.

   Under the notifications section (near the bottom of the page), select
   Support Information Digests.

   To subscribe or unsubscribe to a specific security bulletin digest,
   select or unselect the checkbox beside it. Then click the
   "Update Subscriptions" button at the bottom of the page.

 SSRT3491 Potential Security Vulnerability in ipcs(1) (rev. 1)
 -----------------------------------------------------------------

NOTICE: There are no restrictions for distribution of this
Bulletin provided that it remains complete and intact.

The information in the following Security Bulletin should be
acted upon as soon as possible. Hewlett-Packard Company will
not be liable for any consequences to any customer resulting
from customer's failure to fully implement instructions in this
Security Bulletin as soon as possible.

 -----------------------------------------------------------------
PROBLEM: ipcs(1) has a potential buffer overflow.

IMPACT: Potential for local users to get unauthorized access,
          create denial of service (DoS).

PLATFORM: HP9000 Series 700/800 running HP-UX release B.11.00
          only.

SOLUTION: Download and install patch PHCO_29043

MANUAL ACTIONS: No

AVAILABILITY: The patch is available now from itrc.hp.com

CHANGE SUMMARY: Rev. 01 Added general release patch info.
 -----------------------------------------------------------------
**REVISED 01 **
 A. Background
    A potential buffer overflow in ipcs(1) has been identified
    and now has been fixed. This problem only affects HP-UX
    release B.11.00.

    NOTE: This problem does not impact HP NonStop Servers,
          HP OpenVMS, nor Tru64 UNIX/Trucluster servers.

    The SSRT thanks Davide Del Vecchio for reporting this
    potential vulnerability to HP.

**REVISED 01 **
- -->> AFFECTED VERSIONS
- -->> The following is a list by HP-UX revision of
- -->> affected filesets and the fileset revision or
- -->> patch containing the fix. To determine if a
- -->> system has an affected version, search the
- -->>   output of "swlist -a revision -l fileset"
- -->> for an affected fileset, then determine if
- -->> a fixed revision or the applicable patch is
- -->>   installed.

- -->>   HP-UX B.11.00
- -->>   =============
- -->>   OS-Core.UX-CORE,fr=B.11.00,fa=HP-UX_B.11.00_32/64,v=HP
- -->>   OS-Core.CORE-SHLIBS,fr=B.11.00,fa=HP-UX_B.11.00_32/64,v=HP
- -->>   fix: install PHCO_29043

- -->>  END AFFECTED VERSIONS

**REVISED 01**
 B. Recommended solution
- -->>HP has prepared a patch that can be installed to fully
- -->> rectify the problem. If the temporary depot was downloaded
- -->> it MUST be removed before this general release patch is
- -->>   installed.

- -->> NOTE: Failure to properly remove this could cause
- -->> corruption of the system and inadvertently reintroduce the
- -->> problem at a later time when the temporary patch is finally
- -->>   removed.

- -->> Verification that the temporary depot is installed,
- -->> in /usr/lib/libcrash can be done by executing:
- -->>     $what libcrash*
- -->>    libcrash.2:
- -->>        UNOF_29043 : libcrash $Revision: 1.5 $ SHARED
- -->>    libcrash.a:
- -->>        UNOF_29043 : libcrash $Revision: 1.5 $ ARCHIVE
- -->>    libcrash.sl:
- -->>        UNOF_29043 : libcrash $Revision: 1.5 $ SHARED

- -->> Remove the temporary depot using Software Distributor
- -->>    (SD), then apply PHCO_29043 for release HP-UX B.11.00.
