(Debian Issues Fix) 'mime-support' Insecure Temporary File Lets Local Users Gain Elevated Privileges
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1006621
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1006621
CVE Reference:   CAN-2003-0214   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Apr 4 2004
Original Entry Date:  Apr 22 2003
Impact:   Modification of system information, Root access via local system, User access via local system
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes

Description:   A vulnerability has been reported in 'mime-support'. A local user can gain elevated privileges on the system.

Debian reported that the software creates temporary files in an unsafe manner. A local user could create a symbolic link from the temporary file to another critical file on the server. Then, when an application using mime-support (e.g., mailcap) is executed, the application may overwrite the linked file with the privileges of the user running the application. This could allow a local user to obtain elevated privileges, potentially including root privileges.

Debian credits Colin Phipps with discovery.

Impact:   A local user could obtain elevated privileges on the system, possibly including root privileges, depending on the application using mime-support.
Solution:   Debian has released a fix in version 3.18-1.1 for the stable distribution (woody), in version 3.9-1.1 for the old stable distribution (potato), and in version 3.22-1 for the unstable distribution (sid).

Subject:  [SECURITY] [DSA 292-1] New mime-support packages fix temporary file race conditions

- --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Package : mime-support
Vulnerability : insecure temporary file creation
Problem-Type : local
Debian-specific: no

Colin Phipps discovered several problems in mime-support, that contains
support programs for the MIME control files 'mime.types' and 'mailcap'.
When a temporary file is to be used it is created insecurely, allowing
an attacker to overwrite arbitrary under the user id of the person
executing run-mailcap, most probably root. Additionally the program did
not properly escape shell escape characters when executing a command.
This is unlikely to be exploitable, though.

For the stable distribution (woody) these problems have been fixed in
version 3.18-1.1.

For the old stable distribution (potato) these problems have been
fixed in version 3.9-1.1.

For the unstable distribution (sid) these problems have been
fixed in version 3.22-1.

We recommend that you upgrade your mime-support packages.
