Category:   Application (Generic)  >   WebTool Vendors:   Guardian Digital
(EnGarde Issues Fix) WebTool Input Validation Flaw in 'miniserv.pl' May Let Remote Users Spoof Session IDs and Gain Root Access
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1006166
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id/1006166
CVE Reference:   CVE-2003-0101   (Links to External Site)
Updated:  Nov 18 2003
Original Entry Date:  Feb 25 2003
Impact:   Root access via network
Fix Available:  Yes  Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): prior to 1.2-1.0.74
Description:   A session ID spoofing vulnerability was reported in WebTool in the miniserv.pl component script. A remote user may be able to gain root access on the system. WebTool is based on portions of Webmin, which is also affected.

Secure Net Service issued a security advisory warning that miniserv.pl does not properly filter user-supplied input during the BASIC authentication process. A remote user can inject meta-characters into a Base64-encoded BASIC authentication string to authenticate as an 'admin' user and spoof a valid session ID. The remote user may be able to execute arbitrary commands on the server with root privileges.

"Enable password timeouts" must be set in Webmin for this exploit to be successful.

Impact:   A remote user may be able to gain 'admin' access and then execute commands with root privileges to gain root access on the system.
Solution:   EnGarde has released an update, available at:

Source Packages:

SRPMS/WebTool-1.2-1.0.74.src.rpm

noarch/WebTool-userpass-1.2-1.0.74.noarch.rpm
MD5 Sum: 294fc1527f35b22b6db536b16730c25e

Before upgrading the package, the machine must either:

a) be booted into a "standard" kernel; or
b) have LIDS disabled.

To disable LIDS, execute the command:

# /sbin/lidsadm -S -- -LIDS_GLOBAL

To install the updated package, execute the command:

# rpm -Uvh files

You must now update the LIDS configuration by executing the command:

# /usr/sbin/config_lids.pl

To re-enable LIDS (if it was disabled), execute the command:

# /sbin/lidsadm -S -- +LIDS_GLOBAL

To verify the signatures of the updated packages, execute the command:

# rpm -Kv files

Users of the EnGarde Professional edition can use the Guardian Digital Secure Network to update their systems automatically.

| Summary: WebTool session ID spoofing vulnerability. |
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+

EnGarde Secure Linux is a secure distribution of Linux that features
improved access control, host and network intrusion detection, Web
based secure remote management, e-commerce, and integrated open source
  security tools.

OVERVIEW
- --------
Components of the Guardian Digital WebTool are derived from the popular
  Webmin package by Jamie Cameron.

Keigo Yamazaki discovered a vulnerability in miniserv.pl (the
webserver program at the core of the WebTool) which may allow an
attacker to spoof a session ID by including special metacharacters in
the BASE64 encoded string using during the authentication process.

This may allow a remote attacker to gain full administrative privileges
over the WebTool. All users are recommended to upgrade immediately.

SOLUTION
- --------
Users of the EnGarde Professional edition can use the Guardian Digital
Secure Network to update their systems automatically.

EnGarde Community users should upgrade to the most recent version
as outlined in this advisory. Updates may be obtained from:

    ftp://ftp.engardelinux.org/pub/engarde/stable/updates/
    http://ftp.engardelinux.org/pub/engarde/stable/updates/

UPDATED PACKAGES
- ----------------
These updated packages are for EnGarde Secure Linux Community
  Edition.
