CVE Reference:  GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Sep 23 2005
Impact:  Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
Fix Available:  Yes   Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Advisory:  Secunia Research
Version(s): 3.13, 4.23, and 4.26 BETA
Description:  A vulnerability was reported in 7-Zip. A remote user may be able to cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target system.

A remote user can create a specially crafted ARJ archive that, when opened by the target user, trigger a buffer overflow and execute arbitrary code. An archive with an ARJ block larger than 2600 bytes can cause the overflow.

The vendor was notified on September 5, 2005.

Tan Chew Keong of Secunia Research discovered this vulnerability.

Impact:  A remote user can create an archive that, when processed by the target user, will execute arbitrary code on the target user's system.
Solution:  The vendor has issued a fixed version (4.27 BETA), available at:

3) Description of Vulnerability

Secunia Research has discovered a vulnerability in 7-Zip, which can
be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system.

The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error when handling an
ARJ block that is larger than 2600 bytes. This can be exploited to
cause a stack-based buffer overflow when a specially crafted ARJ file
is opened.

Successful exploitation allows arbitrary code execution.
