RSA Authentication Agent for Web for IIS Input Validation Bug Lets Remote Users Conduct Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1013724
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id?1013724
CVE Reference:  GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Apr 15 2005
Impact:  Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes   Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 5.2
Description:  A vulnerability was reported in the RSA Authentication Agent for Web for IIS. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The 'IISWebAgentIF.dll' does not properly filter HTML code from user-supplied input in the 'postdata' parameter in HTTP POST requests. A remote user can create a specially crafted POST request that, when submitted by a target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the RSA Authentication Agent software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

A demonstration exploit request is provided:

POST /WebID/IISWebAgentIF.dll HTTP/1.0
Accept: image/gif, image/x-xbitmap, image/jpeg, image/pjpeg, application/vnd.ms-powerpoint, application/vnd.ms-excel, application/msword, application/x-shoc
Accept-Language: de
Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded
Connection: Keep-Alive
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1)
Host: www.example.com
Cache-Control: no-cache
Referer: https://www.example.com/
Content-Length: 135

stage=useridandpasscode&referrer=Z2F&sessionid=0&postdata="><script>alert("Vulnerable")</script>&authntype=2&am

Oliver Karow reported this vulnerability.

Impact:  A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the RSA Authentication Agent software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.
Solution:  The vendor has released a fixed version (5.3).
