Vendor Confirmed: Yes
|
Version(s): 3.0, 3.1, and 4.0

Description: Several vulnerabilities were reported in Macromedia's JRun server. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting and session-fixation
attacks. A remote user can also view source code for certain types of files on the system. The impact of a buffer overflow was
not specified.
The vendor reported that an implementation error in JRun 4.0 in the generation and processing of JSESSIONIDs may allow a remote user
to hijack a session or conduct session-fixation attacks.
Some input validation flaws in the JRUn 4.0 Management Console allow
cross-site scripting attacks and session-fixation attacks. A remote user can cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the
target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the JRun software and will run in the security context of that
site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated
with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as
the target user.
A remote user can submit a specially crafted request ending with the ';.cfm' string to cause the target JRun
server to show the source for certain files on the system. Files that are not associated with Macromedia extensions (e.g., '.php',
'.asp', '.pl') are affected.
It is also reported that if the 'verbose' logging debug mode is enabled on the JRun web server connectors,
a remote user can trigger a buffer overflow. In the default setting for verbose logging (disabled), the system is not vulnerable
to the buffer overflow. The impact was not specified.
The severity rating is critical.
Macromedia credits iDEFENSE with reporting
the view source ";.cfm" and connector buffer overflow vulnerabilities, @Stake with reporting the weak JSESSIONID generation vulnerability,
and Acros with reporting the "Unsanitized JRun Session ID Cookie Allows Modifying Server Response" vulnerability, a cross-site scripting
vulnerability, and a session fixation vulnerability in the JRun Management Console.

The impact was not specified for the buffer overflow vulnerability.
