Category:  Application (E-mail Server)  >  Internet Messaging Program (IMP) Vendors:  Horde Project
(Gentoo Issues Fix) Horde IMP Input Validation Hole in Content-Type Header Permits Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1010518
SecurityTracker URL:  http://securitytracker.com/id?1010518
CVE Reference:  GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Jun 17 2004
Impact:  Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes   Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): prior to 3.2.4
Description:  An input validation vulnerability was reported in Horde IMP. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The vendor reported that the software does not properly filter data in e-mail messages in the Content-type header. A remote user can send a specially crafted e-mail message that, when viewed by the target user, will cause arbitrary scripting code to be executed by the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the IMP software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Impact:  A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the IMP software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.
Solution:  Gentoo has released a fix and indicates that all Horde-IMP users should upgrade to the latest stable version:

# emerge sync

# emerge -pv ">=horde-imp-3.2.4"
# emerge ">=horde-imp-3.2.4"

Synopsis
========

An input validation vulnerability has been discovered in Horde-IMP.

Background
==========

Horde-IMP is the Internet Messaging Program. It is written in PHP and
provides webmail access to IMAP and POP3 accounts.

Affected packages
=================

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
     Package            /   Vulnerable   /                  Unaffected
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
  1  net-www/horde-imp       <= 3.2.3                         >= 3.2.4

Description
===========

Horde-IMP fails to properly sanitize email messages that contain
malicious HTML or script code.

Impact
======

By enticing a user to read a specially crafted e-mail, an attacker can
execute arbitrary scripts running in the context of the victim's
browser. This could lead to a compromise of the user's webmail account,
cookie theft, etc.

Workaround
==========

There is no known workaround at this time.

Resolution
==========

All Horde-IMP users should upgrade to the latest stable version:

    # emerge sync

    # emerge -pv ">=horde-imp-3.2.4"
    # emerge ">=horde-imp-3.2.4"
