Category:  Application (Web Server/CGI)  >  ColdFusion Vendors:  Macromedia
ColdFusion Default Error Handlers Permit Remote Cross-Site Scripting Attacks
SecurityTracker Alert ID:  1007764
CVE Reference:  GENERIC-MAP-NOMATCH   (Links to External Site)
Date:  Sep 19 2003
Impact:  Disclosure of authentication information, Disclosure of user information, Execution of arbitrary code via network, Modification of user information
Fix Available:  Yes   Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Description:  An input validation vulnerability was reported in Macromedia's ColdFusion in the default error handlers. A remote user can conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

It is reported that a remote user can insert HTML scripting code via the HTTP Referer header field to conduct cross-site scripting attacks. The remote user's HTML, when loaded by the target user, will cause arbitrary code to be executed on the target user's browser. The code will originate from the site running the ColdFusion software and will run in the security context of that site. As a result, the code will be able to access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.

Sites using the default ColdFusionMX Site-Wide Error Handler page or the default ColdFusionMX Missing Template Handler page may be affected.

Macromedia credits Vagabond Co, LTD of Japan and Robert Fly (robertfly@hotmail.com) with reporting this flaw.

Impact:  A remote user can access the target user's cookies (including authentication cookies), if any, associated with the site running the ColdFusion software, access data recently submitted by the target user via web form to the site, or take actions on the site acting as the target user.
Solution:  The vendor has released the following fixes:

For ColdFusion MX 6.0 (All editions), upgrade to 6.1:

http://www.macromedia.com/software/coldfusion/productinfo/upgrade/

Then, install the replacement Default Site-wide Error Handler page below.

For ColdFusion MX 6.1 (All edtions), use the 6.1 Default Site-wide Error Handler page (12 KB ZIP):

http://download.macromedia.com/pub/security/coldfusion/61/mpsb03-06_6_1.zip

For ColdFusion 5.0 and prior versions (All editions), use the example Site-wide Error handler page (1 KB ZIP):

http://download.macromedia.com/pub/security/coldfusion/mpsb0 3-06_errorpage.zip

Directions for installing the patches are provided in the vendor's advisory:
