CVE Reference: CAN-2003-0167

|
Date: Apr 7 2003
|
Impact: Denial of service via network, Execution of arbitrary code via network, User access via network
|
Fix Available: Yes
Vendor Confirmed: Yes
|
Version(s): 1.3.28 and prior versions
|
Description: A potential buffer overflow vulnerability was reported in the Mutt e-mail client. A remote user may be able to execute arbitrary code.
Byrial Jensen reported that there is a potential buffer overflow caused by an off-by-one error in Mutt's 'imap/util.c' file on line
125. The maximum field width in a sscanf() function call is 1 byte too large.
A remote user (acting as an IMAP server) may be
able to cause a target user's Mutt client to crash or possibly execute arbitrary code when connected to the IMAP server.
[Editor's
note: This was made public in April 2002, but not widely reported on security discussion lists.]
|
Impact: A remote IMAP server may be able to cause a target user's connected Mutt client to crash or execute arbitrary code.

Solution: Debian has released a fix in version 1.2.5-5.2 for Debian Linux 2.2 (potato). The fix for 3.0 (woody) was announced in a separate
advisory [see the Message History].

Debian Security Advisory DSA 274-2 security@debian.org

April 7th, 2003 http://www.debian.org/security/faq
- --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Package : mutt
Vulnerability : buffer overflow
Problem-Type : remote
Debian-specific: no
CVE Id : CAN-2003-0167
Byrial Jensen discovered a couple of off-by-one buffer overflow in the
IMAP code of Mutt, a text-oriented mail reader supporting IMAP, MIME,
GPG, PGP and threading. This problem could potentially allow a remote
malicious IMAP server to cause a denial of service (crash) and
possibly execute arbitrary code via a specially crafted mail folder.
This advisory only covers the old stable distribution (potato) since
DSA 274-1 already fixed the stable distribution (woody). For the old
stable distribution (potato) this problem has been fixed in version
1.2.5-5.2.
We recommend that you upgrade your mutt package.
Upgrade Instructions
- --------------------
wget url
will fetch the file for you
dpkg -i file.deb
will install the referenced file.
If you are using the apt-get package manager, use the line for
sources.list as given below:
apt-get update
will update the internal database
apt-get upgrade
will install corrected packages
You may use an automated update by adding the resources from the
footer to the proper configuration.
