Impact: Host/resource access via network
|
Fix Available: Yes
Vendor Confirmed: Yes
|
Description: An open relay vulnerability was reported in the linuxconf 'mailconf' module on Conectiva Linux. A remote user can send mail via the sendmail server without authorization.
Conectiva reported a vulnerability in the sendmail.cf file generated by the mailconf module that allows sendmail to be used as an
open relay. A remote user can send mail without authorization by addressing the mail in the form "user%domain@".
Conectiva reports
that the default sendmail.cf file distributed with Conectiva Linux sendmail is not vulnerable. However, users that have generated
the sendmail.cf file using linuxconf are vulnerable.
|
Impact: A remote user can send mail to arbitrary recipients via the server without authorization.
|
Solution: Conectiva has issued a fix.

Conectiva notes the following:
After the update, it is necessary to regenerate the sendmail.cf
and the sendmail service must be restarted. In order to do that, use the option "Generate /etc/mail/sendmail.cf" from mailconf
and run the command "service sendmail restart" (as root), if it was already running.

CONECTIVA LINUX SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENT

PACKAGE : linuxconf
SUMMARY : Open relay in mailconf module
DATE : 2002-11-06 17:05:00
ID : CLA-2002:544

RELEASES : 6.0, 7.0, 8

DESCRIPTION
Linuxconf is an administration system which is divided in several
modules. The mailconf module is responsible for the sendmail
configuration.
There is a problem[1] in the sendmail.cf file generated by the
mailconf module that allows sendmail to be used as an open relay. By
exploiting this vulnerability, a malicious user could send SPAM
through the sendmail server without being in its served network. In
order to do that, the recipient address of the messages must be in
the format "user%domain@".
Please note that the default sendmail.cf file distributed with our
sendmail package is not vulnerable to this open relay problem. Only
users who have generated the sendmail.cf file using linuxconf are.
For information about mail relay and why it should be configurated
properly, please consult the "Open Relay Database FAQ" [2].
SOLUTION
All users of the linuxconf-mailconf module should upgrade.
IMPORTANT: after the update, it is necessary to regenerate the
sendmail.cf and the sendmail service must be restarted. In order to
do that, use the option "Generate /etc/mail/sendmail.cf" from
mailconf and run the command "service sendmail restart" (as root), if
it was already running.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS
Users of Conectiva Linux version 6.0 or higher may use apt to perform
upgrades of RPM packages:
- add the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list if it is not there yet
(you may also use linuxconf to do this):
rpm [cncbr] ftp://atualizacoes.conectiva.com.br 6.0/conectiva updates
(replace 6.0 with the correct version number if you are not running CL6.0)
- run: apt-get update
- after that, execute: apt-get upgrade
