Category:  Application (Generic)  >  Application Control Management System (ACMS) Vendors:  Compaq
Compaq Application Control Management System (ACMS) for OpenVMS Operating System May Allow Local Users to Obtain Elevated Privileges
Date:  Feb 25 2002
Impact:  User access via local system
Fix Available:  Yes   Vendor Confirmed:  Yes
Version(s): 4.3, 4.4
Description:  Compaq reported a potential vulnerability with the Compaq ACMS application for OpenVMS. A local user may be able to obtain elevated privileges on the system.

Compaq reports that OpenVMS Alpha may have a potential security vulnerability in its processing of ACMS process privileges. This reportedly does not affect the security of the OpenVMS operating system and only affects customers that have installed ACMS.

To verify if ACMS has been installed, customers can use the following command:

$ ACMS/SHOW SYSTEM

If ACMS is not installed, OpenVMS will reportedly return a "%DCL-W-IVVERB, unrecognized command verb" error message. If ACMS is installed, ACMS will reportedly return a status message with the installed version of ACMS.

No further details about this vulnerability were provided by Compaq.

Impact:  A local user may be able to obtain elevated privileges on the system.
Solution:  Compaq has released patches for ACMS V4.3 for OpenVMS Alpha V7.2-2, V7.3, available at:

http://ftp.support.compaq.com/patches/public/vms/axp/

(choose the version directory required and download the appropriate patch.)

DEC-AXPVMS-VMS72_ACMS-V0100--4.PCSI
DEC-AXPVMS-VMS73_ACMS-V0 100--4.PCSI

Compaq recommends that you review the README file(s) for patches prior to installation.

For ACMS V4.4 installations Compaq has created a new ACMS V4.4A release for OpenVMS Alpha V7.2-2, V7.3 that is being distributed on the OpenVMS Product Library CD starting 25 February 2002.

Compaq advises ACMS V4.4 customers to upgrade to V4.4A immediately and provides the following advice:

"After completing the update, Compaq strongly recommends that you perform an immediate backup of your system disk so that any subsequent restore operations begin with updated software. Otherwise, you must reapply the patch after a future
restore operation. Also, if at some future time you upgrade your system to a later patch version, you may need to reapply the appropriate patch."
